Handling Domestic Violence Cases for Tribal Judges

About the Event

Appropriate disposition of cases involving domestic violence require judges to master difficult legal, procedural and psychological cases. After attending this four-day course, tribal judges will be able to develop follow-up systems in civil actions, make criminal defendants accountable to the court, and create effective responses to reported violations of court orders. They will also be able to rule more confidently on evidentiary issues, orders of protection and enforcement, bonds, pretrial releases, judgments and sentences.

Regional State/Tribal Jurisdiction Symposium

About the Event

The curriculum on the first day will provide an optional jurisdictional primer, while the curriculum on the second day will focus on complex issues faced by tribal and state judiciaries within the region. The general topics to be covered will be substantially the same: Indian Child Welfare Act cases, enforcement of domestic violence protective orders, Public Law 280, full faith and credit and comity, and inter-governmental agreements/compacting. The Symposiums will be held in partnership with local tribes and/or universities to ensure that the curriculum is relevant to the needs of the particular region.

Ending Violence Against Native Women Training Institute

The Ending Violence Against Native Women Training Institute provides a strong foundation for advocates and their allies to work effectively within their own programs and within a coordinated response. The Tribal Judicial Institute Director, BJ Jones, is the author of the American bar Association’s Handbook on the Indian Child Welfare Act and has conducted trainings on this topic in 25 states for tribal and state representatives.
