Congratulations and welcome to the University of North Dakota School of Law.
The University of North Dakota School of Law is one of the most wired schools in the nation. What this means is that we have network access* available for our students anywhere in our buildings.
In addition, the School of Law offers to all their students:
- Student computer lab (Macintosh and Windows workstations)
- Fileserver storage
- Email accounts
- Color laser printing
Students are encouraged, not required, to purchase or bring their own laptop. Almost any current production laptop out in the market will suffice. Here are the minimum requirements for computer support, while attending the School of Law:
- Minimum of a Pentium M or Centrino processor; G3 PPC, or equivalent processor
- Minimum of 512 MB of RAM, preferably 1 GB, the more, the better
- Ethernet and modem ports
- Wireless PCMCIA or internal card (802.11b or 802.11g)
- Video out (VGA, RCA, or S-video)
- We recommend a three year extended warranty to cover repairs while in Law School.
- Microsoft Office for word processing and presentations
Currently, UND School of Law supports both Windows and Mac OS X operating systems on the network.
Due to network configurations, driver support, and staff constraints, we may not fully support Windows 95/98/2000/ME/NT or XP Home or Vista.
The School of Law provides training and tech support through Computer Services, which is part of the Thormodsgard Law Library. Computer Services personnel work with most computer equipment, however, they do reserve the right to refuse technical support on hardware or operating systems that do not meet the minimum requirements outlined in this document.

*Network access can be achieved through Ethernet and wireless networking. The wireless network supports both IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g standards, which are cross platform communication protocols. 802.11b can achieve network speeds of 11 Mbps, while the faster standard 802.11g can achieve 54 Mbps data rates.
It is strongly recommended when purchasing a wireless card that you choose a quality manufacturer. Linksys, Netgear, and Cisco are all great choices. Dlink, Blitz, Trendware, and other lower-end wifi cards are discouraged and may not be supported.
