Inappropriate Questions

There are certain types of questions that are not appropriate and even illegal under current state and federal statutes. Such legislation as the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with its amendments guarantee fair and equal treatment under the law for all job applicants. Employers who schedule on-campus interviews are notified of these guidelines. Certain types of prohibited information cannot be used to disqualify candidates for employment. Employers cannot and should not ask questions relating to your personal life. Such areas include:

  • Marital Status
  • Credit Rating
  • Financial Status
  • Spouse's Employment Status
  • Religious Affiliation
  • Social Activities
  • Family Status and Size
  • Age
  • Physical or Mental Disability or Handicap
  • Arrest Records (Different from conviction record)
  • National Origin

You have rights that are guaranteed and protected in the employment process. If you are confronted with any of these issues in the course of your interview, contact the Career Services Office. The University of North Dakota's Human Resources Office and Affirmative Action Office will then be contacted for appropriate response and action.
